We’re only six hours to the nearest ferry port, and with a choice of three airports a real change of scene, culture and climate is easy to come back to time and again. And what makes people come back time and time again? The heritage is unique with the oldest prehistoric caves in the world, two unique monolithic churches at St Emilion and Auberterre (the spire is the only thing above ground) and some of the most famous vineyards in the world. Why should people travel to your region at least once in their lifetime? Since living here I have run a small business and been able to explore the area in my own time, taking in the many sites, cities and local attractions on offer both within our hometown and in the wider area. My husband’s work takes him abroad for a lot of the time, but when we are all together there is no place in the world better than home and a poolside BBQ with friends. We bought our home here in the Dordogne almost ten years ago when we moved lock stock and barrel from Wiltshire in search of a better quality of life. This place is a real gem.When you’re off on holiday, there’s something magical about leaving your comfort zone and trying new things. It was not a big deal though, since we were not there to surf the internet. Also, we couldn't access wifi from our second floor room and had to go downstairs to get closer to the router. The hotel is not hooked up with a credit card reader, so be prepared to pay in cash. Although we didn’t opt for it, we smelled some very tempting dishes and witnessed a lot of happy diners there. The couple that own the place are very attentive. They have all been recently redone, with expensive windows that lock out all noise. The rooms are largish, all with a queen bed and a single bed. The photos of the hotel on their website are beautiful, showing the patio near the river. Food is very good in the region, especially if you are a fan of duck. Most of the towns have large beautiful churches and there are a number of chateaus to visit. It is off the beaten path but close to some very interesting things, like the famous caves where man first displayed his art. Astier is a small (pop 4000) town in the Dordogne Dept. It is a small hotel (about 9 rooms) right on the beautiful L’Isle River in St. Had a superb stay at the Rives de L’isle.
